Cheryl is the principal and lead teacher of the nonprofit Community Transitional School, Portland’s pre-K through 8th grade school for children whose families are homeless or in transition. She was the first teacher hired when the school began in 1990 at the Portland YWCA.  Today, located in its permanent home in the Cully Neighborhood in NE Portland it helps at-risk students develop the skills, habits and determination they need to break out of a life of poverty and homelessness. Prior to her career at CTS, Cheryl was a social worker in New York City and an inner-city teacher in New Orleans.
